About
I am a hotel engineering director in New York. Over 15 years I have run engineering at 7 properties: PUBLIC Hotel New York, Ace Hotel Brooklyn, The Dominick, Park Lane New York, the Crowne Plaza Times Square, The St. Regis New York and The Westin New York Grand Central, from 286 to 800 rooms.
The job is the building. I own fire and life safety, HVAC and building management systems, elevators, the capital plan, the operating budget, the union engineering team and the reporting to ownership and executive leadership. At PUBLIC that meant about $3 million in capital work, a $1.5 million operating budget, a $470,000 service elevator modernization and the engineering recovery after major water damage.
I left PUBLIC in October 2026. I am looking for my next role as a Director of Engineering or above with a luxury or full-service operator or owner in New York, and I am available now.

4.2 NYC compliance
| Law | What |
|---|---|
| FDNY Certificates of Fitness | The Fire Department licenses the people who operate sprinkler, standpipe and fire safety systems. A hotel keeps enough certified staff on every shift to stay legal and safe. |
| DOB elevator CAT1 and CAT5 | Every elevator gets an annual Category 1 test and a 5-year Category 5 full-load test, filed with the Department of Buildings inside tight windows. |
| Local Law 11 (FISP) facade | Buildings over 6 stories have the facade inspected every 5 years. Engineering coordinates the inspection, any sidewalk shed and the repairs. |
| Local Law 87 energy audit | Every 10 years the building gets an energy audit and retro-commissioning, which is where the next round of efficiency projects comes from. |
| Local Law 97 carbon caps | Hotels over 25,000 square feet face emissions limits from 2024, tighter from 2030. It shapes the chiller, boiler and controls capital plan. |
| Local Law 77 cooling towers | Cooling towers are registered with the Health Department, sampled for Legionella quarterly and certified annually. The engineering director is usually the responsible person. |
| Local Law 152 gas piping | A licensed master plumber inspects exposed gas piping on a 4-year cycle. A failure means a shut gas line and a dark kitchen. |
| DOB boiler inspections | Each boiler is inspected annually and the report filed within 14 days. Late filings carry fees per boiler. |
| DEP backflow prevention | Backflow devices are tested every year and the results filed within 30 days to protect the city water supply. |
| NFPA 25 and 72 fire system testing | Fire alarm, sprinkler and standpipe systems are inspected and tested monthly, quarterly and annually, with a fire watch and FDNY notification whenever a system is impaired. |
